Supporters talk about what the President’s support for marriage equality means to them, their friends, and their loved ones.
    • AlbertoFLORIDA
“Marriage equality would allow me to legally state my commitment to my partner, and would allow us the simple rights that so many already have. My heart was overwhelmed with hope and love after President Obama’s public support for marriage equality. I am hopeful for a future where I am able to show and share my love with my partner by marrying him.”

“I was raised by my two loving parents, Anne and Jenny. Yes, they’re both women. Yes, that means they’re gay. No, that doesn’t mean that our family is of any less value than another. President Obama supports the rights of my family, and that’s something that cannot be argued with. I am honored that my first vote in a presidential election will be for Barack Obama.”
    • RickALABAMA
“What you said to the American people took real courage: the kind of courage that is required of LGBT men and women daily. Thank you for caring enough for all Americans to take a stand on same-sex marriage. I want you to know how happy, hopeful, and free I feel today because you had enough courage to do what is right—even in the face of political adversity—in support of my civil rights. You’ve made a difference already.”
    • JanMICHIGAN
“Thank you, President Obama! As the mother of a gay son, this has touched my heart deeply. To have my extraordinarily kind, loving son be denied marriage and a family is beyond wrong. To have your support on this issue makes me not only love you as a President, but love you as a human being.”

“On November 3rd, 2012, I’m marrying Daniel—the most incredible, generous, and loving man I’ve ever met. Daniel was brought to America at the age of 4. He graduated from college in 2010, has no criminal record, and is an incredibly talented artist.”
“On our second date, Daniel nervously told me he is not a U.S. citizen. Not realizing the full implications, I shrugged it off with a smile. After becoming engaged, we had a more serious discussion about his situation and the full reality hit me. Daniel explained, with tears running down his face, how he didn’t choose this situation—how he feels trapped, and how frustrating it is. I made it clear to him that no matter what happens, I will stand by his side.”
“On June 15th, I boarded an airplane to see my family for Father’s Day. As soon as the plane was in the air, I flipped on CNN. And then I gasped. What I saw unfolding was hope: hope for Daniel’s and my future. After we landed, I called Daniel. He was shocked. I ran into the house when we got there and turned on the TV in time to watch President Obama give his speech. As I explained what was happening to my dad, we both choked up.”
“Thank you, President Obama. Your courageous decision to do what is right means Daniel and I can now both pursue our dreams without fear of the future. I know the road ahead for us is still long and hard. But as my dad keeps saying, ‘it’s a game changer.’ You gave my dad the best Father’s Day gift imaginable and you have changed our lives forever.”

    • My husband and I keep saying to each other how excited we are that President Obama was re-elected. My favorite memory is watching the election results and being astonished and overjoyed at the results of all of his and so many volunteers’ hard work. Tears were in my eyes. Every single day, I give thanks he is our president. His humility in talking to his Chicago staff and the country about how we have made him a better president is awesome and inspirational. His legacy is already made, but I foresee great things from him. I love how he is standing up for climate issues, immigrants, the poor and the middle class. God bless the President and his family as he serves the country and our world.

    • November 6th, when I knew Barack Obama had won his second term as President, was one of the happiest days of my life. My daughters, who are 12 and 9, followed this race closely with me. My little girls even campaigned for you, because they know this is their future we are talking about, and I have always taught them their decisions are theirs and no one else’s to make for them. Please stand by what we have all fought for—what my little girls are fighting for—because they want a life that is equal for them in health care, pay, and society altogether. Keep moving forward and continue to fight the fight you have fought the last four years to make us whole again.

    • This election, for me, was the difference between living with confidence or living in fear. Can I be competitive in the workplace independent of my medical condition? Or am I defined by it? So when I went to fill out my absentee ballot, even though I live in a deeply conservative state, it was important for me to fill in that circle for the President. It means that on January 1st, 2014, I can stand tall again after years of fighting a chronic illness because I can no longer be denied health care coverage due to my pre-existing condition. Nobody in the United States should have to go without a meal, not have a roof over their head, or have to beg for lifesaving medical care. By passing health care reform, we’re one step closer to that ideal.

    • I think President Obama faces significant challenges, but he is one of the most remarkable leaders of our time. I am confident that he will have the power to heal our nation, and once again create that shining city on the hill that President Reagan talked about. To me, this means the restoration of the middle class, renewed hope for my future, and my continued support for President Obama and the Democratic Party.
